The short answer
There is no single normal number of Instagram Story views. A useful starting point is to compare your average Story viewers with your follower count, then watch how that percentage changes across comparable Stories. The result is a measurement of your inputs, not an official Instagram benchmark.
Calculate your Story View Rate
Story View Rate = average Story viewers ÷ followers × 100. For example, 850 average viewers from 5,000 followers gives a 17.0% Story View Rate. Use a recent sample and keep the comparison consistent: similar posting windows, content types, and audience context.
Reach, impressions, and viewers are different
Reach usually describes unique accounts that saw content. Impressions count total displays, so one account can create more than one impression. Viewers are the accounts represented in the Story viewer count. Instagram Insights can present these metrics differently by surface, so do not substitute impressions for unique viewers in this calculation.
Example scenarios
Scenario A — 2,000 followers and 220 average viewers: 11.0%. Scenario B — 8,000 followers and 1,600 average viewers: 20.0%. Scenario C — 8,000 followers and 400 average viewers: 5.0%. These examples are illustrative, not claims about a universal healthy range. Compare each account with its own history and goals.
Optional Story Completion Rate
If you know the number of viewers on the first and final slide, calculate Story Completion Rate = final-slide viewers ÷ first-slide viewers × 100. A lower completion result can point to a weak opening, too many slides, or a mismatch between the first frame and the promise of the Story. It cannot, by itself, explain why viewers left.
What can improve the trend
Make the first frame clear, keep a consistent publishing rhythm, use interactive prompts when they fit the audience, and review where viewers drop between slides. Follower count alone does not determine Story reach: content relevance, timing, audience activity, account context, and viewer choice all matter.
