Choose a formula you can support
A public estimate is (likes + comments) ÷ followers × 100, using averages for the posts in your sample. If you have Insights, you can define a broader interaction total or divide by reach instead.
Label the numerator and denominator. A zero or missing denominator means unavailable, not a useful percentage.
Keep the comparison fair
Take a dated sample of comparable posts, for example the last ten Reels rather than a mixture of Reels and photos. Use the same method each time.
Note paid promotion and unusually viral posts; do not quietly remove weak results to improve the average.
Calculate your engagement rateRead the result in context
For example, 30 likes and 5 comments against 1,000 followers gives 3.5% with the public formula. This is a worked example, not an Instagram benchmark.
Read comments, profile actions and enquiries alongside the rate before deciding what needs improvement.
Do not mistake purchased activity for proof
Use the calculator to understand the baseline, then improve content and profile clarity. If you compare paid interaction services, keep that activity separate in reports to clients or brands.
A purchased metric cannot establish genuine audience interest, organic performance or future sales.
Which number are you calculating?
| Method | Data needed | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Public estimate | Visible likes, comments and followers | Not all interactions are public |
| Insights-based | Chosen interactions and reach or followers | Account access and clear definitions needed |
| Either method | A dated, comparable sample | No automatic proof of sales |

Your next questions
More detail to help you decide what to do next.
Can I estimate another account’s saves from its likes?
Not reliably. Missing private metrics should stay unknown, not be presented as measured facts.
Does 3.5% mean my account is healthy?
Not by itself. It is an example calculation; account type, sample and business results still matter.
Separate measurement, advice and commercial services.
Meta describes likes, comments, saves, and other actions as signals whose likelihood Instagram predicts for Feed ranking; Meta does not publish one fixed universal weighting.
Compare one clearly labelled formula over a defined period, and separate content formats and organic from paid distribution.
BoostMaus offers visible likes, views, comments, saves, and reposts for supported public content.
Additional interactions do not guarantee Explore placement, virality, recommendation eligibility, sales, or organic growth, and they do not replace organic Insights.
